The new interface is here!

Today we are releasing 4 component updates built with our new "next generation" component architecture. The two most recent components, StatusSymbol and MetaMorph were originally built using this architecture and now they have the new features enabled. ThumbsUp and MouseTrap were totally rebuilt.

What's new?

  • Easier-to-use and easier-to-see graphical interface where developers can now see all component images before publishing.
  • Properties are logically grouped in a simple tree structure making it easier to control component configurations.
  • Component selector replaces toolbars which have become too big and have started to take up too much screen real estate.
  • Option to use old properties palette for quick changes or people who don't like change.
  • More stable asset management avoids problem of ghost assets.
  • Better access to support and tutorials right from the component selector.

As you can see most of the improvements are in the interface. But, rest assured that that the internals are better, too.

    Compatibility with old components

The next generation components are an entirely different animal than the old ones. In previous component updates a new installation would automatically convert the old components into new ones. This is not the case, here. Next generation components do not replace old ones.

For instance, if you have an old ThumbsUp component on the page and install the new ThumbsUp, you will find that the old ThumbsUp will be totally unchanged (still functional). And, you will find that the old ThumbsUp component is still on the old toolbar. The new ThumbsUp can only be placed on the page using the new 'coolmaps' toolbar (the one with just one cog icon on it). To place the new ThumbsUp on the page, drop the cog icon on the page, select ThumbsUp on the Component Selector, and push the [Use It] button.

If you have an old ThumbsUp on your page, there is no urgent need to replace it. You can leave it there and only use the new ThumbsUp to create NEW thumbnails.

    More Updates To Come

In the weeks ahead we will be converting more and more components over to the next generation version. Updates will be announced when they are available.

We hope you enjoy our next generation components. Feel free to drop us an email with your comments and suggestions.
