What Does File Away Do?
(1) It uploads an entire directory of files to your server
(2) It creates links to each of the files it uploads
Please, tell me more
Users tell the component what types of files they want uploaded (jpg, doc, txt, gif, pdf, etc), and
how they want the links to be displayed (text, fauxgraphic, number of columns, etc). At the time
of publish, the component searches the specified directory, adds the matching files to the asset manager,
and uploads the files. It also creates the links page.
If the files are graphics (jpg or gif), FileAway will change the links into PopRockets. When users
click on a link to a graphic, it will show up in its own special sized box. Today's update (Aug. 11, 1999) adds
a small border around the graphic to make sure it fits into all windows on all browsers.
How can FileAway be used to manage external content?
I am glad you asked :-) You can tell a non-web person to put all their docs they want to share into
a directory on your network. These files can be Excel, Word, PDF, etc. This person can update
and add to the directory as they please. You don't need to bother yourself with what this person is
doing. Whenever you publish your site, however, the latest content from the directory will be uploaded
to the webserver and links will be established.
Content that is new will be added to your links. Content
that is no longer available will not be linked. Content that has been updated will be updated because the
new versions of the files will be saved over the old ones. So, others can maintain content and when
you publish, there content becomes part of your site.
What are the tricks with uploading HTML files using FileAway?
FileAway can even upload HTML
files and all associated graphics if the files are all in the same directory. You can put
files into the same directory in Fusion by publishing "flat". If you want all files in the directory
to be uploaded (even though only the ones with the specified extension are linked to), set the
"Upload All Files" option to true.
How come there are no examples of FileAway in the Components in Action?
That beat's us. We think this is a cool component! If you have a good application, please send
us a link.

Dear Coolmaps Guys,
One of your last components FileAway has become my most favorite one. We are using it in our local Intranet extensively. And we have done it further... half automated. The problem with FileAway was that the link shows the file title. And sometimes it´s difficult to understand other´s file names (e.g. ibm22_8a.doc). Thus, we arranged that our mail server sends those files into the directories. And on top of that: The subject of the eMail becomes the title of the document (e.g.: Latest News of IBM.doc). Now, others simply send their documents to the mail adress, mention the clear and understandable subject (don´t forget extension...) and the mail server sends it to the said directory. Once a day the site/or page is re-published...and that´s it.
Pretty cool.
Just wanted you to know.
The mega deal would be to have automatic publishing process...
